Ten years ago, a campaign was launched in Cobb County called "NO JEWISH CHILD LEFT BEHIND". The goal of the campaign is to educate the local principals, teachers, and parents about the county's policies for Jewish holidays. We want to ensure that every Jewish child can celebrate the holidays with the Jewish community and not be left behind in school.

Whether children remain in school or celebrate the High Holidays is probably one of the most fateful decisions and critical factors in forming their Jewish identity. The message it sends the children about priorities regarding Judaism cannot be overstated.  

In a meeting with members of the Cobb County School system, the superintendent, Mr. Chris Ragsdale, confirmed the county's commitment to its policy regarding students being absent on religious holidays.

This is the Cobb County School's policy on excused absences: 

In accordance with State Board of Education Rule 160-5-1-.10 and O.C.G.A. § 20-2-690.1 the following are considered excused absences: 

3. Observing religious holidays necessitating absence from school.

The Superintendent also explained that teachers are encouraged to keep in mind the dates of these holidays when scheduling tests and assignments. The local principals are reminded of this by the School System as well as by our committee.

Please be advised that this year, Yom Kippur is Monday, October 21st.
